Firefighters Battle Four-Alarm Blaze Tuesday Morning

Fire broke out on block of mixed-use residential and commercial buildings

A fire that broke out amid a block of attached rowhouse buildings was brought under control in about an hour Tuesday morning, Capt. John Brown of the Newark Fire Department said.

The blaze broke out around 11:50 pm Monday night at 512 Orange St., a building containing an appliance store on the ground floor and apartments above. It spread to an adjacent building, 510 Orange St., and threatened to consume other buildings on the block before it was brought under control around 12:36 am Tuesday morning, Brown said.

No one was hurt in the fire, which went to four alarms before it was contained. A fourth alarm was called due to the danger to other buildings on the block, Brown said. The full extent of the damage was still being assessed Tuesday morning.
