Inmates Coming to Newark and a New Chancellor for Rutgers

Albert Couthino, who represents the 29th Legislative District in the state Assembly, suffered a heart attack Friday. He was reportedly in stable condition.

The Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders approved a plan to house inmates from a South Jersey jail in Newark. About 75 inmates will be housed at the Newark facility.

The board of governors of Rutgers-Newark voted to hire a new chancellor, Nancy Cantor, at a salary of $385,000. Cantor, who will take over at Rutgers Jan. 1, served as chancellor at Syracuse University. 

A grand opening was held for a combination mini-precinct and community center located in the heart of downtown, near the intersection of Broad and Market streets.

A 17-year-old city youth was charged with the carjacking of an off-duty Newark police sergeant June 2.


Former Gov. James McGreevey received a “pride” award from an Essex County gay rights group. McGreevey is the only openly gay person to serve as a governor in the nation’s history.
