Turn on the air conditioning — or at least a few fans!

An intense heat wave will wash over Newark starting this Wednesday, just in time for the summer solstice Thursday at 7:09 p.m.

The summer solstice is the point in time when the Earth's axis is most inclined toward the sun, bringing about the longest day of the year for the Northern Hemisphere, and the official start of summer.

Monday's temperatures will be cool and comfortable at 72 compared to the rest of the week when the heat wave kicks in Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Tuesday will be cloudy to start, gradually becoming mostly sunny with a high near 79.

Under mostly sunny skies Wednesday, temperatures will reach to a boiling 96 and peak again at 95 Thursday. On Friday, there's a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorm with a high near 90.

Things cool off starting Friday night, with a low of 64, and will reach the mid-80s on Saturday and Sunday.
