Democratic Incumbents Reign in Districts 28, 29

Republicans no match for Democrats in Assembly, Senate races

Democratic incumbents in Essex County crushed Republicans in Tuesday's general election to retain their Assembly and State Senate seats, according to unofficial results.

In District 28, long-term Sen. Ronald L. Rice secured another term in the state senate, overwhelmingly defeating Republican candidate Russell Mollica, of Bloomfield. Rice is the third-most senior senator in New Jersey, behind Richard Codey (D-27) and Gerald Cardinale (R-39).

In the District 28 Assembly race, Ralph R. Caputo and Cleopatra G. Tucker were heavy favorites over Republican candidates Carol Humphreys and David H. Pinckney. Caputo, who served as District 5 freeholder and freeholder vice president, opted not to seek reelection to the board after serving on it for nine years. In District 5, Caputo is succeeded by Democrat Brendan Gill, who easily beat out opponent Steven Rogers.

Following the redrawing of legislative boundaries this year, District 28 now encompasses Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Irvington, Nutley and parts of Newark.

In District 29, which is comprised of most of Newark and Belleville, Democratic incumbent M. Teresa Ruiz handily regained her Senate seat over Newark residents Aracelis Sanabria Tejada (R) and Laurie J. Taylor (I). Meanwhile, Democratic incumbents L. Grace Spencer and Alberto Coutinho were reelected to the Assembly in overwhelming fashion, defeating Republican candidates Elaine L. Guarino and Lisa T. Kistner.
