Newark Police Officer Commits Suicide Saturday
Unnamed officer served on the force for decades
A Newark police officer died Saturday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Police Director Samuel DeMaio said in a statement.
The officer, who was identified only as a “highly respected” veteran of more than 20 years, died shortly after 5 pm in the 300 block of N. 10th Street.
“He was a highly respected officer among his peers and in the community in which he served with pride. He will be sorely missed by all those with whom he interacted,” DeMaio stated. “On behalf of Chief [Sheilah] Coley and the entire Newark Police Department we extend our prayers to his family. Today is truly a sad and tragic day as we mourn the loss of one of our own."

Hello everyone, a lot of people seem to believe they know the name of the officer involved. But given the sensitive nature of this incident we ask that you please refrain from sharing any speculation on this site. Even if you're correct there are probably very good reasons his name has not been released by official sources yet. Thank you.
