A 17-year-old Newark youth was arrested Wednesday after he fired a few rounds from a shotgun and aimed the weapon at a police officer, Sgt. Ronald Glover of the Newark Police Department said in a statement.

Police responded to 99 Carolina Ave. around 11:30 am on a report of shots fired. Officers saw a teen matching a description of the suspect, who pulled the 12-gauge weapon from his waistband and pointed it at police. The teen dropped the gun after being ordered to do so by police, then fled on foot.

Officers chased the suspect through backyards and over fences before he was caught. Two officers were hurt during the pursuit and another officer, responding in a patrol car, was injured when the car slid on a patch of ice and struck a wall. All three officers were treated at University Hospital.

The teen has been charged with several weapons offenses, resisting arrest and aggravated assault on a police officer.

"I think our officers demonstrated a tremendous level of restraint given the circumstances. The officers risked life and limb and were relentless in their pursuit and apprehension of the suspect in this incident,” said Police Director Samuel DeMaio. “I am pleased that our injured officers will be able to recover from their injuries and I wish them a speedy recovery and congratulate them on a job well done.”
