Newarkers Nominated for Jersey Hall of Fame

Philanthropist Ray Chambers, singer Whitney Houston would join list of state's most prominent achievers

The New Jersey Hall of Fame has announced its current list of nominations, a group that includes artists, athletes, businesspeople, politicians and scientists. Many of this year’s nominees also have ties to Newark.

Among those with a connection to the state’s largest city are Aaron Burr, a Revolutionary War veteran who served as vice-president under Thomas Jefferson; singer Whitney Houston;  actor Joe Pesci, whose film credits include “Goodfellas” and “Home Alone”; Peter Rodino, the veteran congressman who oversaw President Richard Nixon’s impeachment hearigs during Watergate; and Willis Reed, who helped the New York Knicks win two championships and is now vice president of basketball operations for the New Orleans Hornets.

Begun in 2008 to honor outstanding New Jerseyans, past honorees include Walt Whitman, Thomas Edison, Franco Harris, Jack Nicholson, Shaquille O’Neal and Frank Sinatra.
