NPD Recovers Two Weapons, Arrest Three Saturday

Police report siblings detained after fight, 19-year-old man held after fleeing.

Newark police said they recovered two weapons in a pair of separate incidents this past weekend resulting in the arrest of three people.

In the first incident, police were at the intersection of Clinton Avenue and Stratford Place Saturday, April 13, around 2 p.m. when they saw a woman and youth engaged in a fight.

The officers intervened and arrested 20-year-old Samiah Rollins and her 16-year-old brother, charging both with assault. Additional charges were filed against Samiah Rollins for resisting arrest, while her brother was charged with possession of a weapon when officers discovered a loaded .380-caliber handgun at the time of his arrest.

Later that night, officers in the Narcotics/Gang Unit arrested a 19-year-old Newark resident around 7:30 p.m. for unlawful possession of a firearm after police saw a group of men on the porch of an abandoned home.

Police said Shareem Williams fled from the home and allegedly tossed a .38 caliber revolver when police approached.

The gun was recovered and Williams was captured after a short chase, police said.

"While I am pleased by the continued success of our officers who are routinely recovering these firearms from our streets, I am alarmed by the ages of these suspects who are carrying these weapons of death and destruction,” Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio said.
