One person is dead and another in critical condition following a shooting inside a South Ward home in Newark Monday night, authorities said.
Tyfees Hamler, 26, of Newark, and another man were shot inside an apartment in the 100 block of Schley Street at around 9:15 p.m. Monday, according to Katherine Carter, spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Hamler died while the second man, whose identity was not released, remains in critical condition at University Hospital.
Detectives, who discovered a large quantity of marijuana inside the home, are investigating robbery as a possible motive in the shooting, Carter said. An investigation is active and ongoing and no arrests have been made at this time.
The one-way street, lined with multi-family residences, was blocked off by Newark Police and ECPO vehicles hours after the shooting occurred. One neighbor said late Monday night that he was "shocked" to hear of the crime that occurred just a few houses away.
The man, who did not want to be identified, said he's seen people frequently move in and out of the residence, which he said is situated next to his cousin's home.
"It's fairly quiet," he said of the street on which he's lived for 40 years.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the ECPO tips line at 877-847-7432.
