PHOTOS: Parade Celebrates Clemente Legacy
Thousands march in honor of baseball great prior to statue unveiling yesterday
Young baseball players, classic car afficionados and dozens of others marched up Bloomfield Avenue yesterday from Broadway to Lake Street, where a statue of the late Roberto Clemente was unveiled at Branch Brook Park (see related story).
The order of march listed three dozen separate groups, including students from the Roberto Clemente School, the North Ward Center, Newark Explorers, the Essex County Sheriff's Office and Las Plenaras Latinas. Marchers waved -- and wore -- the red, white and blue Puerto Rican flag in honor of Clemente's native land.
Marchers were escorted by the Newark police and fire departments.
When the parade ended, marchers remained at the corner of Lake Street, re-christened in honor of Clemente, to see the bronze statue for the first time.
