Prominent Newark Attorney to Chair Essex County Heart Walk

Annual event raises awareness of heart disease

The American Heart Association announced Francis J. Giantomasi, partner at the law firm Genova Burns Giantomasi Webster in Newark and a city native, will serve as chairman of the American Heart Association 2013 Essex County Heart Walk scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1 ADP Boulevard in
Roseland.

The walk,  sponsored nationally by Subway and Jenny Craig, is the American Heart Association’s flagship fundraiser held in more than 450 communities nationwide.  As chairman of the Essex County Heart Walk, Giantomasi will oversee participants from Essex County companies, employees, residents and families.  In addition he will manage a volunteer executive leadership team to recruit more than 3,000 walkers and raise over $500,000 to support American Heart Association research and education programs.

“It is my great honor to be chairman of the Essex County Heart Walk,” said Giantomasi.  “With the great communities we have throughout the county that support organizations like the American Heart Association, this year’s walk should be the best ever.”

Heart Walk is part of My Heart My Life, the American Heart Association’s new national movement to radically improve America’s health through a comprehensive wellness and fitness platform for businesses and families.  This is in response to America’s obesity crisis, the lack of physical activity among the population and rising healthcare costs.  More than 140 million people are overweight or obese and sedentary jobs have increased 83 percent since 1950, says the American Heart Association.

Obesity costs American companies $12.7 billion a year.  Some experts believe that if obesity among children continues to increase, our current generation will become the first in American history to live shorter lives than their parents.

Local sponsors supporting the Essex County Heart Walk include Investors Bank, Genova Burns Giantomasi Webster, Barnabas Health and PSEG.
