Ryan Lanza, Wrongly Named As Mass Murderer, Left To Grieve

Hoboken man learns his brother killed 27 people, including their mother.

Ryan Lanza was at his job in Manhattan on Friday when news outlets began to report that he had massacred 20 school children in a sleepy Connecticut town.

The reports said Lanza, a 24-year-old Quinnipiac University graduate, had murdered someone in his Hoboken apartment and then drove to Newtown, Conn., where he used a .223 caliber rifle and two other guns to kill 27 people before turning the gun on himself.

The dead included his mother, Nancy.

Lanza's thoughts quickly went to his developmentally disabled younger brother, Adam, whom he began to fear may have been responsible for the violence at Sandy Hook Elementary School, friends said.

As media reports continued to name Ryan Lanza as the shooter and plastered his face across the world, he took to Facebook and told friends he was not the man responsible for the brutal slaying.

"Oh my god, I think my mother is dead," he wrote, a friend told Patch.

Ryan Lanza and his roommate were being questioned Friday night at Hoboken Police headquarters. Neither have been charged with any crime, Hoboken Police Captain Jim Fitzsimmons said.

"Ryan is in shock," a close friend, Brett Wilshe, told Patch.

Lanza works in the city at a financial company, Ernst & Young, and lives in a five-story brick building on Grand Street known as "The Metropolitan."

Media outlets quickly scrambled to "The Metropolitan," where Hoboken police gathered with FBI agents. Initial reports said that someone was killed at the apartment and that Lanza's girlfriend was missing. As curiosity grew from onlookers and media members, police draped yellow police tape around the perimeter, closing both sides of Grand Street just after 2:30 p.m.

No bodies were found inside the building, Fitzsimmons said.

Lanza was planning to head to Connecticut after hearing about the shooting, friends told Patch.

Those who know the Hobokenite, described as "nice" and committed to his friends, were also shocked by the news.

"At first you're devastated that 30 people were shot to death," friend Katie Colaneri told Patch. "And then you find out it's someone that you know, that you've met, that you've hugged. And you don't know whether to feel angry or sad. You find out your friend is alive but caught up in this mess. It's incredible."

"He's not a guy capable of shooting up a school," another friend of Ryan's told Patch Friday afternoon.

Yes, absolutely irresponsible, the first outlet to report it should be held accountable; the followers also, to an extent—though at least they had one source that they might have thought was reliable. Guess nobody will make that mistake again.

There were always a lot of mistakes by the media. The real judge of their integrity
Is how quickly and completely they correct themaelves, and what they do to undo the damage. It use to be illegal to interview a kid without adult permission. And it probably still is. Whoever did that should be convicted of child abuse and put on a watch list.

Bonnie, agreed that breaking stories often contain inaccuracies; responsible timely correction is indeed crucial—but taking time to check something as important as a possible suspect’s name seems reasonable. (Not sure about the police giving the name out; if true, that was equally irresponsible.)
I am not sure that a simple interview of a child ever was, or still should be, illegal—those kids seemed pretty able to handle themselves, and I thought the reporters were better with them than I would have expected; just shows that adults do understand that kids need to be treated a bit more cautiously than adults. No watch lit, you may allege child abuse, but in my court you would not get a conviction.

This is the seventh mass shooting- defined as four or more victims at the same time and place- in 2012. There were a few more killing fewer than four. What is always missing from the conversation is the fact that virtually all mass murders in the US over the last twenty five years were commited by people on anti depessants or other mind altering drugs. Look it up. From Andrea Yates drowning her five kids, the school shootings, almost all. Mental health screening is not the answer. Many drug ads state up front the side effects to be aware of -changes in mood, mania, thoughts of violence and suicide, yet people do not have to see a mental health doc. anymore- these drugs are freely prescribed by family MDs The over medication of society has many effects and this has to be discussed. The American Psyciatric Assn. is coming out with the controversial 2013 DSM, diagnostic statistical manual of mental health disorders. Once this is accepted the over medication may get much much worse, shyness, defiance to authority, eating healthy food, grief and many normal human emotion may potentially be classified as a mental disorder. Again look it up- it has its own Wikipedia page. They giving psych meds to kids as young as 6 months old now. Big Pharma sees a market that is still fully un tapped. I believe medication should be a last not first resort when assisting people with mental health crisis. When the fully story comes out, don;t be suprised if this man was under care and on drugs.

Actually the truth is, if a patient is on anti depressants and is monitored by a psychiatrist and a therapist, this doesn't usually happen. The problem is when you have drugs prescribed by an internist and the patients are not monitored by a psychiatrist who will check regularly with the patient. And talk therapy with a qualified therapist is vital, weekly, to get a bead on what the patient is thinking. And drugs work individually and it can take awhile to come up with the right combination. This did not happen overnight. Experts have been saying it was planned and I believe it could've been prevented. Especially if the mother had not had guns in the house where the young man could've had access to them. He might not have come up with the idea. And you are wrong about Andrea Yates. She was NOT on antidepressants. That was the problem. Her husband didn't believe in them and she had postpartum depression that was left untreated where she did not see a therapist and have medication. And as a psychiatrist told me, patients who commit suicide while on medication do so because they have been prescribed by an internist NOT a psychiatrist.

If mental patients are out there....LOCK THEIR ASS'S UP IN INSTITUTIONS.......before they crack and take out 20--30 innocent people at a time!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the drug issue is real; they are seemingly attempting to medicate any unusual personality. And heaven forfend one is diagnosed—from that moment forth, one is not allowed any display of emotion that is not approved; everything is considered a symptom of disease, and answered with “have you been taking your medication?”, “maybe your medication needs to be adjusted?“
What a society this is becoming!

I agree that there are children who need these drugs, but they should go through major testing before a prescription is written. Also, if people would get back to living by biblical principles, this world would be a better place all around. Just read the ten commmandments if nothing else. I have noticed that everytime there is some type of trajedy, the churches are filled. Don't wait for something bad to happen, let's fill those churches every week, pray for those all around us including our government officials and the decisions they are making for our lives, and see for yourself the possitive changes that would come about. Our world is falling apart and we need to put it back together.

Agree lou, look at the guy that went into the police station begging for help and they called off the ambulance and let him go free then he killed his mother and injured his father. However the mental disorders are getting old for these killings, just between the movie theater and the school almost 40 people will not be spending the holiday with their family and both were pinned to the shooters being mentally ill. Sorry but I have neurological problems plus not all that cheerful and pleasant because of them and would never ever consider plotting a mass shooting. I suffered clinical depression as a teen and could not take the meds because of side effects I suffered and did not murder. I am sure there are tons of mentally and neurologically impaired people that do not kill. What we need is to start punishing and stop excusing this and maybe someone will not want the punishment that follows the crime, and if people outright say they need help or want help, just because they are over 18 DO NOT IGNORE IT.

Let's stop this maddens.s contact our leaders.

Dear leaders of this country,

Where is the outrage? Children were killed just for sitting in a classroom.
Why do I only see calm relaxed condolences from you?
It is like this is an everyday event that we will get over, move on and forget about until the next time.

This is not acceptable to me and I want something to be done about it. And the solution should not be constrained by funding or people's rights.

Human life is priceless and that of our children more than priceless.

What kind of adults are we if we cannot protect our children? What kind of country have we created when children do not feel safe in their town and their classroom?

What are you going to do about it. I want an answer now.

I think we have the gun laws in place but we don't have law enforcement. Mayor
Guiliani had it right when he went for no tolerance on crime. It should be the priority of 30every local.town government. We got rid of our mental institutions in the 70s and now mental health is usually some family doctor tosing pills at someone. Some of these pills are truly wonderful but only in a complete care context. But when Atlantic Health head

Your point is valid about health insurance companies. If they would reimburse adequately for mental health, which is a disease, then more patients could afford expensive treatment and incidents like this wouldn't happen so often.

@Anne. She may have been protecting herself from her psycho son. The facts around his "disability" are not clear. He could 't have been that "disabled" since he knew how to shoot, drop and reload clips. The only facts that we have are the mistake the Police made in releasing his brothers name before they in fact were certain of information they pulled off a paychopath. Thus, putting his brother in harms way of another psycho who wants revenge now that the media has published his address in Hoboken. In the meantime 27 families are without a family member and worse without a child or brother or sister. They are in the safety of God. My prayers are out to everyone affected on this horribly tragic and emotional day.

Actually nonnie, the money that would be spent on mental health and law enforcement would reap many benefits in the long run. You have to look at the big picture. When people who are mentally ill are treated properly, like anyone else who has a disease, then you have more productive and less dangerous people in our society walking the streets, etc. The problem mentioned by another commenter is the way the law works if a patient, who is an adult, doesn't want to take their medication, their is no way to force them to have treatment and take their medications. The laws have to be changed so that people who need to be medicated and treated can be forced to. We need places, not just mental hospitals, for these people to be supervised and where they can live and receive meds as needed.

There is absolutely nothing about being developmentally disabled or about having a personality disorder (a rumored diagnosis) which would have impaired his ability to load and shoot a gun. Clearly he was severely mentally impaired -- probably far in excess of the current diagnoses. The trouble is that our current system offers little in the way of protection from mentally ill people who refuse or do not respond to treatment. Even when a parent fears the violent potential of an adult child, she is often afforded no help by law enforcement or the public mental health system. Even the best insurance policy wouldn't be of much help if he was unwilling to participate.
I am inclined to agree with the writer who suspected that the mom was armed to protect herself from her son.

Insane rampages are, sadly, not confined to the United States. One happened this very day in China, where a cruel madman attacked a group of children at school. Twenty-two children injured. Versus, at current count, 18 little children and nine other people shot dead. That's the difference between a knife and a gun. Guns don't attack children; psychopaths and sadists do. But guns uniquely allow a psychopath to wreak death and devastation on such a large scale so quickly and easily. America is the only country in which this happens again -- and again and again."

Sorry DoubleD, but untreated and/or undertreated mental illness is often the root cause... It was with the Virginia Tech and the Denver movie theater shootings, and is likely the cause here.

Take a look again at the disturbing pictures of the mentally ill Denver shooter.

If he had been forced to take long acting antipsychotic medication, a lot of people in Denver would still be alive. I expect a similar picture to reveal itself here as the facts emerge.

High-risk, seriously mentally ill individusls need more treatment, not less. You placing the blame on psychiatric medications is like saying "Tylenol causes fevers." (Fyi, tylenol reduces fevers).

For cryin' out loud, we all have different levels of disabilities and abilities so PLEASE stop the effing stigma on mental illness! If you have ever taken an anti depressant or an anxiety med, you are in the system as, "mentally ill". Being mentally ill does not mean you go round killing innocence! And don't make every one with Asperger's be a killer! I have a dear family member with Asperger's and he is the kindest sweetest soul I know. I HATE STIGMA! it instills fear and hate of people who are different.
If mental illness were looked at as the same as heart disease, diabetes, or cancer, maybe things like this would be addressed before they happened, but our system is broken; it is almost impossible to get help for people who don't want it but need it. It is equally as hard to get even if you DO want help!
Most of all, my heart is broken for all the families that will have to live with the pain of loss for the rest of their lives. It is hard to loose someone you love no matter how they go.

Musique you are right on target. It's a disease and the treatments are not covered properly. There is a huge stigma and people mistakenly believe that it's the patients' fault and that it's easily controlled without any help. It's the way the brain is wired, that's not something you can change with antibiotics and mental diseases are not cured but controlled. And you are right about the families who will never see their children grow up and for the adults' relatives who will never see their loved ones again. But it will also be tough for Ryan because he will always be known as the brother of a killer and he will never get to see his mother again.

I knew then and used my experience to help him. There were once 3 of us in the district now there is only one Susan Galperin at the HS.These jobs are so important to getting are kids help ask many who are my former students.I've made my mistakes and angered "sick parents "who raised these kids but it was my job to help them and most will tell you I did help them. Our governor has vilified teachers and staff and yet I know it is a thankless job that many wouldn't want. Wake up New Jersey our governor is ruining our education system and more like myself are getting out of education. Many young teachers are feeling same. There isn't enough money in this country to fix every social problem we have. This country with all its laws and all its money and all its social programs is unsalvageable. This country will collapse and burn under its own weight. Only then will we rise from the abyss. Until then more killings like this will occur. I have no solution because there is no solution.

Agree Mary Bell. I have zero guns. I always believed that if I did have one and attempted to use it, the perpetrator would take it away from me and use it on me. I still believe that. They just flat scare me. In the meantime I have two Chihuahuas who raise enough of a racket (and one mean one bites if you look at him cross-eyed) and if that doesn't scare anyway away then I'm toast. But frankly, I'm reconsidering my fear. I mean a class of kindergartners? Four and five year old babies? Moms sent them off to school 10 days before Christmas and probably spent time making Christmas cookies, shopping and wrapping presents while they were 'safe' at school until they got home.

As a mom of 4 (all grown) this makes me weep. My heart breaks for those poor moms and dads who have lost their precious little ones.

The need to check facts for a news story went away with the advent of cable news. The instantaneous ability to report a story has become the primaty concern for every news outlet. They want to be the first to tell a story. Not the one to report the correct story anymore. If they are lucky and get it right the first time, good for them. If they get it wrong, bad for whoever they reported as the bad guy. They are not quite so quick to make corrections to stories as they should be. The person they reported first now has to convince everyone that they were not the one to commit the act.

I personally think that the son was upset with the mother, because all the attention she was giving the children she taught and neglecting him, and if he was truly disabled he did not understand that love and caring is a wide spread and it goes a long way, I truly believe that he was mad and took it out on his mother and her students to get revenge and when he realized what he did he shot himself for he knew the trouble he would face if he got arrested. Not so disabled if he knew to kill himself. So Sorry for the families that lost loved ones my heart and soul go out to all and I am praying for all you to get through this most inhuman act of violence for I will light a candle for all.

Jeanette your exactly right most of it is due to an untreated mental illness or not being monitored properly. Some are saying individuals are doing it because of the meds, in some cases this could very well be true. However, if the patient is being monitored by a therapist and MD it is unlikely. Most plans are acted upom when the person is coming out of depression because that person has the energy to follow through with their plan. And for whomever said that they need to be locked up in a mental institution like people go to jail, The fact is most of the ppl that are in jail have a mental illness, also ppl who use drugs and alcohol are self medicating their illness, ect. The fact of the matter is 1 in 4 ppl suffer from a mental illness and usually when have one you have another to go with it, thats ppl that you are in contact with and around on a daily basis and dont even realize it. Its not legal to keep ppl locked up that have a mental illness, the can only be heald for a certain amount of time on an involuntary admittance and then you have to have them sign a voluntary and still they can only be institutionaled for no longer than 10 days max before insurance will not pay. Also there are limited phsy.facilities long & short term & there are a limited amount of rooms. Unfortunately, as the economy gets worse: loss of homes, jobs, ect., you wil see more ppl suffering with mental illness depression, anxiety ect.

Karen you are so right about it getting worse because of the economy. People don't understand the long term costs of ignoring the mental health needs of people. Depending on the diagnosis there are people who need long term treatment and drugs, until they are stable, and there is no place for them to go. It's penny wise, pound foolish thinking. God knows what this young man's diagnosis was and if he was receiving treatment. They said today that this brother and father had been estranged from him and hadn't seen him in years. There had to be a reason for that. And the fact that he planned this, including getting the bulletproof vest, means that he was thinking of this for a while and had been sick for a while. This breakdown would have taken time. And the worst part is, now they say his mother didn't have a connection to the school, so why did he choose to go their and shoot those children. It makes it even more senseless than it already is. And the problem is that no matter what his motivation was, it will never make sense to those of us who's thinking is not warped.

Karen

12:12 am on Saturday, December 15, 2012

And the only way they can be admitted involuntary is if they are a threat to themselves or others, and its for 3 days max unless you can get them to sign a voluntary during that time period. And for the one that says depression, anxiety, ect. is a mental illness true but im sure you have not worked with these ppl and actually seen how bad shcitzo, personality disorders, bi-polar can get and be at times. Educate yourselves before referring to these things as if it should be taken lightly. Read some books, watch some movies on real life experiences with it better yet go get a degree and work with it! It will truely be one of the saddest and best experiences you will have ... and yes i do have a degree and i have worked with these patients and i do have a son with a mental disability and its a 24 - 7 job!

And it's a helpless feeling when you can't help your child at times feel good about themselves, feel some sense of normalcy and feel that in the end, they will turn out all right. There is also a lot of anger directed at you, as the parent, and it's hard to be strong at times and always do the right thing for them. We as A NATION asked G-d to get out of our schools, our court rooms, and just about everything, we are truly living in a unprotected Country, G-d will not stay where He isn't wanted, so don't be surprized if these senseless killings keep on going, we will see more and more terror, (homegrown) we need to put our Creator where He can protect us. We need Him still !! I know, I will receive some nasty mails after that post, but this is my firm belief! We rejected G-d, and He, as a Gentlemen, will not be, where He isn't welcome! I cried for these families, I can't phantom the heart wrenching pain they are going through, my heart is heavy with such sorrow!! My, my!!! too much grief! No one deserve such evil descending on them, if the schools aren't safe for our precious children, then, what? Children need a safe environment to learn.

I have a question for all the people defending the media on plastering his name without fact checking first. Did the police also tell the media he worked for a financial company Ernst & Young in the city, and lived in a 5 story brick building on Grand Street called the Metropolitan ? What is the point of providing that information?

I have lived in Connecticut All my life. This for me was the first most horrible situation to happen here. I don't know any of the people who have lost their lives but still, my heart is broken and I cry as if they are family members. I can only hope and pray the families can try and heal one day and may the lost rest in peace. Their lives cut too short. What confuses me is why would his mother purchase those kind of guns in the first place? For herself? I am sure she knew her youngest son was unstable, why would she want to bring possible danger into her home? I find this odd. She brought her own death upon herself. He was a ticking time bomb ready to explode. Another thing, is why he had his brother's identiication on him. Didn't Ryan realize this? Hes off in NJ and his brother is here in CT........how did he get it? And why wasn't it missed sooner? This whole story just strikes me as bazaar. I guess.........like a book........I'll have to wait..........chapter by chapter to read what happens next. God Bless you Connecticut, I still love you.

Who knows why the teacher mother had guns....it was her prerogative under the law...but, know not all like to follow the law...the Constitution has been shredded so often nowadays it is hardly noticeable....maybe that will turn out to be the reason...NO VALUES ANYMORE...PLAIN AND SIMPLE....DO YOU SEE THEM IN GOVERNMENT?

Sarah, it's very possible he had a copy made. There are many underage children who have fake id's so they can drink at bars, and I have seen one and it's very authentic looking. So it's very possible he had one made up. And maybe he had it because he was trying to punish him because of the estrangement. We will probably never know.

Olivia it's possible he bought it in another state or at a gun show. There are so many dealers who turn a blind eye to gun purchases and don't do background checks. Hopefully we will find out, so we can possibly put a stop to the person who sold him the guns, if they weren't sold to his mother. I really hope his mother didn't buy the guns, because that would be even more tragic to be killed by your own son with your own weapons.

The police are supposed to act as professionals. They are not to release information until they have the facts. If you notice it was 3 law enforcement officers who would only "speak on condition of anonymity" which is a cop-out.
I disagree with the person who said that it could not hurt the wrongly accused man. He has a job and his name and pictures of him being taken in by the police have been on the news and the internet. He has had to explain himself.
The 3 law enforcement officials who spouted off their big mouths should be fired immediately! They acted irresponsibly and highly unprofessionally. If they can disobey those rules would you trust them to take you in to custody?
I hope he sues the law enforcement officers he has both slander and libel that were used against his name with no checking first.
This young man is every bit a victim as the others and he deserves our condolences.

Yes 20 children are dead and resting in peace, leave it at that. 6 innocent people over 18 are dead also, I see no mention of them and one teacher gave her life to protect her class. However you are missing the point that a surviving family member of the killer is being labeled as the killer himself. Will ask you the same question I asked nancy, would you like the title of a child killer. Would you like if thats what you were labeled as. I think John who commented after me had a good conclusion, they should keep it anonymous and claim under investigation till they know all info is correct. And you seem to be more focused on destroying the guns over accepting the fact 20 kids are dead and regardless of what happens to any gun we can still get killed and those 20 kids are not returning unfortunately.

This horrible incident brings to light how initial reports can be confusing, wrong, and misleading. This happened in the US where we have immediate access to the investigators. Yet, we find members of the GOP being highly critical of Ambassador Rice and the administration for the erroneous reporting of the tragedy in Bengazi. This should be a lesson to them that not everything initially reported is always accurate.

Our food supply is laden with chemicals, our new generation of children are diagnosed with many abnormalities. I mean really autisim and related dysfunctions have skyrocketed, then thet get medicated. The fda should ban all food colorings and flavoiungs. In the meantime while they sort thru how to do make the mfgs remove it, we as a people could stop buying these tainted products. You will see how quickly it will change. The bullets are locked up and hidden in another area. Not where anyone could find or have access to the weapon. Our rifle also has a key part removed form it rendering it useless should someone gain access to it. Weapons need to be locked up and not with ammo, if you have them. There needs to be special evaluations and certificates and locking mechanism for individuals to purchase guns. A require psych eval would not be a bad idea either. There is no need to have semi automatic weapons for hunting either.

You're right Laurie. If you want to own a gun, you should have to follow the same rules in every state. And so should the gun dealers. And I believe in having psychological testing, some jobs require it, to make seriously mentally ill people who might be dangerous, are unable to obtain one. And most of all, get assault rifles off the streets. NO ONE needs to own one, except the police and military members who are at war. Unfortunately, the NRA has too many lobbyists that are against gun control laws.

The Story Could Have Read: A crazed gunman entered the Sandy Hook elementary school this morning and was killed by the armed principle, after the irrational gunman opened fire, narrowly missing three students.

Think too. Obviously this person was out of his mind and seemingly wanted to kill as many people as he could. Did he pick a school because he knew that law abiding citizens who are legally licensed to carry guns, are prohibit by law from carrying them in a school, and therefore he would not be challenged?

Here’s another cut on how it could be have read: A crazed gunman entered the Sandy Hook elementary school this morning and was killed by a policeman who happened to be in the building after dropping off a student’s backpack that was inadvertently left at a bus stop. The officer open fire on the irrational gunman after the gunman shot at three students.

One more question. Did calling 911 prevent this tragedy?

We are as unable to keep guns out of the hands of sick people, just as much as we are unable to keep heroin and other drugs out of the hands of drug users. The only way to stop violence is to quickly stop sick people who are acting out from killing others.

Rod, seriously how do you propose to do that? Have the government search every home, car, and person in the nation? What if people hide their guns behind their walls in their houses because they know the government is coming to look for them? Do you think the government then has a right to destroy your house, ripping walls down and whatnot looking for guns that may or may not be there? What if people hid their firearms in the woods? Burn all the woods down? Seriously, how do you collect the guns?

Get a grip. Guns are here to stay. Here is another fact. Not being from Jersey I grow-up in a place where we high school age children took our rifles into school, stored them in our lockers, and went hunting after school. No one shot anyone, not to say our high school was atypical. We still had fights and all the other garbage that goes on in high school, but no one ran and got their gun. I hazard to think what would happen to anyone who did. Of course back then we all had morals, the Ten Commandments were posted on the walls of our schools and people unfit to fit into society weren’t allowed to walk about as if they were fit to!

Because the reality is that even though some mental illness doesn't show up until the 20's, from the link you can see he had obvious signs for years. She definitely taught him well. And now they are saying that it was obvious that he killed himself once the first responders came, and that he intended to kill more people, before he was stopped.

Rod Gibbons,

I usually do not comment on this sort of issues. However your statement that "If you own a gun as far as I'm concerned you are a potential killer" is in my view incorrect. A killer will use any method to kill, be it with a gun, saw, bat, chainsaw, screw driver, circular saw, car etc.. Guns just allow you to kill at a distance rather than up close. Please note Tim McVeigh who killed many without the use of a gun. Enough said on this matter.

I understand that many people are up in arms and upset and those are arguing for more gun control laws. However, is there an official report on where Adam Lanza got the guns?

Here is what I found so far:

"The guns — Glock and Sig Sauer handguns, as well as a Bushmaster .223-caliber assault rifle — were legally obtained and registered to Nancy Lanza"

If one has a person living with you that has developmental disabilities or other mental issues then two questions stand out.

1. Why were the guns easily accessible to him? If the mother kept the guns loaded in the house without securing them then she is responsible for this massacre as much as Adam is.
2. If they were not easily accessible to him (such as locked in a safe with a trigger lock and unloaded) then how did his get his hands on them?

I own four firearms, they are kept in a safe, unloaded with trigger locks. The ammo is also kept in a locked box which is inside yet another safe. Both safes have different combinations. This is responsible gun ownership. Keeping loaded guns where they can be easily accessed by a mental unstable person or a child is not the fault of gun laws. it is the fault of irresponsible people.

Gun control is not pathetic in this country...there are so many "controls" yet they are rarely carried out. More gun control will do nothing. For you to say that anyone who owns a gun is a potential murderer is highly offensive. You'd better hope that the 2nd amendment stays put...the alternative is that the bad guys and the government (one in the same?) are the only ones who have guns. I personally would end up sleeping with one eye open every night if that were the case because criminals will still get guns even if it's illegal. The only people who suffer from gun bans are law abiding citizens who want to defend themselves from violent criminals. Also, that nasty 2nd amendment is in place to prevent the government from complete tyranny.

Controling guns is not the point. In the old days, kids brought their rifles to school after shooting squarrels for their supper. Teachers put the rifles in the corner of the room and started class. It's not the guns that kill people, it's people that kill people. Most guns and rifle owners shoot their weapons at shooting ranges or hunts for food or sports. ...A few disturbed people don't set the standard for the rest of us. I am a former woman Marine and I own a pistol, my husband, a retired Marine, owns some weapons and we have no intentions of hurting a soul... ever. We just like to go to the range and practice on paper targets for fun. So, don't judge us all. I am so very sorry for this awful awful act of violence on innocent babies and teachers. It is despicable and evil what happened. I pray this doesn't ever happen again. America and the people are a great nation. America is compassionate towards those who are hurting and in need. Something else to consider – Yesterdays tragic events are heart breaking there is no doubt about that and I don’t want to diminish that, but since everyone else is pushing their political point……

Yesterday 30 people were killed on American Roadway because of drunk drivers. As wretched as yesterday shooting was, at least it is over now. Sadly 30 more Americans (including children) will be killed today by drunk drivers, and another 30 tomorrow, another 30 the day after that and the day after that, and the day after that….

Isn't it time we do something about this too?

Edward, you have a point. Politics is being played out here. So, Let's get rid of alcohol in America. No more drunk drivers. Not political, just good common sense. No more illegal drugs. Health care costs would definately go down. No more abortions cause that is murder of the more hanus kind. Again, health care costs would go down. Sorry Edward, I had to vent. You're a good guy. Take care.

Auto deaths are accepted by Americans who refuse to accept lifesaving 55 mph speed limits. Are they that complacent about firearms? Looks like it.

I know drunk driving is a horrible thing but let's not get carried away. Let's make a list of every "item" that has caused a death and outlaw all of them, OK? Drugs/guns/alcohol/rope/knives/matches/baseball bats/scarves/bare hands/airplanes/cars...I'm sure there are many more! Let's just do away with everything that might look/smell/taste like it could hurt someone. There. All better.

I'll bet their were plenty of "T" or "M" rated video games that glorified shooting people and zombies/people in his house. It's called practice. Guns aren't really the problem, video games that are so violent and de-void of kindness toward anyone prepares sick minds for even more sick behavior. Just a thought.

What prompted people to violence before video games, in your opinion?

There are tons of them, Suzie! And in response to Nancy Duggan - TV has been around for a very long time. Violent? You bet. You put violence on TV and in movies, violence in video games, God out of EVERYTHING, the mentality of "whatever feels good, do it", etc. That's where all the violence comes from.

And it's a GOOD thought Suzie Littrell because IT IS FACTUAL! That, coupled with simple psychology that Adam Lanza likely was a "child that didn't get the attentions from his mother as the school children did" will also emerge. Being mentally challenged IS A CHALLENGE ~~~ living with the stigmatism that they are "not quite right" is a burden beyond most "NORMAL" people's realization. The brother may not have been the villain, but remaining at a distance with his brother Adam is obviously indicating an isolation Adam had involving the broken family he came from. Guns are not the problem, BROKEN DOWN MENTALITIES THAT MISUSE FIREARMS IS THE PROBLEM....IT'S PEOPLE THAT KILL PEOPLE DRIVEN BY THEIR OWN INNER UNRESOLVED PROBLEMS...NOT GUNS!

As this all unfolded our EatDrink editor Brett Wilshe was texting with Ryan who was wrongfully accused. Brett had over 108 media requests and I had to field numerous request from CNN, the Today Show, Fox news etc....My comments to them was simple and direct....."Brett does not want to talk to you, as you are one of the reasons why Ryan's life is always going to be associated with this horrible tragedy. Furthermore if the media actually did there jobs and verified the information, instead of trying to be the first out with the story, you would be more respected." Lastly we asked every media outlet to give Ryan a chance to clear up his good name when it is time. The media has really sunk to a new low. How CNN and the others would do this to him is horrible. Where is the sense of real journalism? My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families and parents of those impacted yesterday. Very sad.

Beginning Monday, government helicopters will be over-flying all of America. They will be carrying metal detectors and scanning every inch of ground for anything that looks like a gun. All gun images detected by the airborne scan will then be immediately destroyed by side winder missiles carrying a small technical nuclear war head, fired form the helicopter. People with guns in their house or on their person are strongly advised to place them as far away from their house or person as they can before Monday.

You laugh? This following story is true. A young child was punished in an American Public School, because he held up a piece of pizza he had taken a bite out of which made it look like a gun, and then pointed it at his friends! Hey, I can’t make stuff like this up: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2821712/posts

@Allen Stevensome - perhaps this was god's will - he did not stop it did he? Well as all my christian friends would say "they are in a better place." Sounds hollow and phony when an atheist says it. The "media" which many of you are maligning only do what they do because YOU watch it. Turn it off. @Little John - it's 'ditto' - and guess what America it is time to place heavy restrictions if not an outright ban on guns. Hopefully the Supreme Court will reevaluate the 2nd ammendment. This will not be the last school massacre at least not until we decide we love our kids more than guns.

My daughter sent me this link that I think expresses from the mother's viewpoint, what it's like to live with a potentially violent, mentally ill child and how hard it is to get the proper treatment, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/16/i-am-adam-lanzas-mother-mental-illness-conversation_n_2311009.html

Hope they look into everything. Still not convinced he acted alone. Would be the perfect crime using a mentally ill person to do ones dirty work. They should probably look into everything two weeks prior to murder. Everything seems odd still. I feel bad for the families - I would want all avenues looked into. I think there may be more to this than what we see.

I was wondering how long it would take for the conspiracy theorists to come out of the woodwork though some have already said it was MK Ultra.

Its funny, everybody wants to jump on gun laws, the media, and everybody else! I'm not a gun person, but I do agree with the statement that"guns don't kill people, people kill people".this is a sad day for our country and we should be concerned about the people who are dealing with such a tragedy, if he didn't have a gun, it could have been a knife, a club or a damn spoon! I have never posted anything before but felt that this deserved it, lets hope and pray for those left behind, there is a dead man to blame, lets get it off the news and let them grieve in peace, this is going to start a big debate what we should be doing instead of helping those have lost, think what this will do to the survivors for the rest of there lives.it will take years or never to put the joy of the holidays back in their lives, my heart goes out to them! Sorry for your lose Sandy Hook Elementry

I do not in any way wish to trivialize what has happened in Newton, CT. Murder is horrendous and the numbers in one episode don't make more or less so. There are more suicides in this country by guns than there are murders by guns. Those suicides are by and large committed by handguns than by semi-automatic rifles. Revolver or pistol; one shot is all it takes. Most people who own guns do not commit crimes with them. Notice I did not say ''do not commit crimes'' I'm sure many bankers own guns and they'll rob you with a pen than with a gun.

Remember Richard Jewell (now deceased) who was a guard at the Atlanta Olympics (1966)? He discovered a bomb and took appropriate action (notified police, warned people away from the backpack containing the bomb, etc). He was identified as a hero for his actions. That is until he was falsely accused of being the bomber a few days later. He was later completely cleared -- it turned out it was a man who blew up an abortion clinic and later confessed to the bomb event in Atlanta. The police, including the FBI, rushed to judgement, as did the news media. The harrassment he suffered went on for weeks (months?) and was unforgiveable. Mr. Jewell eventually sued for libel and won big (for those days) monetary awards. He came to symbolize the excesses of law enforcement and the news media. But as far as I can see, nothing's changed in news reporting since then. ` Well, except now we also have the "social" media set who send the false information around the world at warp speed.

Thanks for the link John. I really had no idea, not owning a gun, how in some ways it's more dangerous because it gives a false sense of security. And now impossible it is, without training, to actually use a gun for protection. So it really gives a false sense of security to owners who purchase guns for protection.

I'm not saying teaching gun safety will end the recklessness of gun use http://www.airsplat.com/airsoft-safety.htm but it does not hurt to educate!
