Don't forget all the cab companies. NJ having non regulated taxi cab rates allows all local cab companies to Jack their prices for a 1 mile ride to and from the Meadowlands area up to $60-$100 a ride or some ridiculous amount. They already do it during any event at the Meadowlands.   more ›

5 Cars: Muscle Cars for the Car Enthusiast

There's nothing like the open road, a powerful car and a beautiful Spring day.

This week's 5 Cars suggests grabbing a muscle car. What's that? According to Merriam-Webster, it's one of "a group of American-made two-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving." We're talking a huge, honkin' V6 or V8 engine, rear-wheel drive, something you'd imagine Fonzie driving in a drag race. Best of all, a muscle car can make its driver look like she or he shouldn't be messed with: These powerful, though fairly inexpensive, vehicles can make you look and feel tougher, stronger, sexier and richer than you probably are. You know, three grand makes for a tidy down payment... And after dealing with the IRS, feeling tough while being thrifty may be exactly what the doctor ordered. 1. 2014 Ford Mustang…

Report: Auto Insurance Premium Costs Soar in Newark

Brick City residents pay more than 30 percent more than state average to insure their cars, averaging $2,780 a year.

Garden State residents continue to lead the nation in the cost of auto insurance – and that number may be climbing, according to a recently published report. But in a twist for Essex County residents, especially those in Newark, residents there pay 30.4 percent above the statewide average in premiums, according to a posting on onlineautoinsurance.com that was published Tuesday on NorthJersey.com said. That means the average quote for Newark is $2,780 while the statewide average comes in around $2,130, the report said. Insurance brokers say crime rates, population density figures and racial breakdown figures account for the lower insurance rates. Conversely, residents in the Caldwells and West Essex pay $1,550 (27.3 percent below the state …

Healthcare Workers Protest Proposed Benefit Cuts

Employees at Newark facility have gone nearly two years without a contract

Dozens of employees of a Mt. Prospect Avenue nursing home picketed the facility Wednesday in response to proposed cuts to their health benefits and stalled contract talks. Many of the 80 members of 1199 Service Employees International Union United Healthcare Workers East were joined by members of other activist groups as well as elected officials for the “informational picket” held at the Forest Hill Healthcare Center. The union represents dietary aides, certified nurse assistants, housekeepers and other caregivers, many of whom earn between $11 and $12 an hour. The workers’ wages have remained flat since their last contract expired in June 2011.  Patricia Matthews, 47, a nurse’s assistant whose husband is recovering from cancer, said that…
