Buono Says Christie is Weak on Gun Control

Gubernatorial candidate speaks in Newark Monday about the 'scourge' of gun violence

The likely Democratic candidate for governor accused incumbent Chris Christie on Monday of supporting "shallow" gun control legislation in order to avoid alienating conservatives elsewhere in the country. “This governor calibrates every decision he makes with an eye towards 2016. He calibrates every decision he makes with an eye towards making sure it plays well with voters in the cornfields of Iowa, instead of standing up for what’s right for the people and neighborhoods of New Jersey,” state Sen. Barbara Buono  (D-Middlesex) said during a press conference held at Good Neighbor Baptist Church in Newark. Buono is expected to win next month’s primary, but is an underdog in the November governor’s race against the popular Christie, who is …

I don't own a gun now, but intend to buy one. I don't care what you legislate, you will not take guns from the hands of those who intend to use them to create mayhem. Criminals won't obey gun laws! That's why we call them criminals! If there was a registered handgun in every home, owned by a trained user, crime would go down.   more ›

Buono Supports Ending State Control of Newark Schools

Gubernatorial candidate campaigns in Newark Wednesday

State Sen Barbara Buono continued her campaign for governor in Newark Wednesday, stopping at a Halsey Street restaurant for a meet-and-greet with diners while taking shots at the record of incumbent Chris Christie. “I didn’t think the Republicans could find a Republican more out of touch with the middle class than Mitt Romney. But they did,” the Middlesex County Democrat said during her stop at Je’s Restaurant. Buono said Christie, who enjoys high approval ratings, presides over a state where 400,000 are still unemployed and where the “middle class has actually shrunk.” Buono is the likely favorite to win the Democratic primary next month, leading a field of candidates little-known statewide. She would face Christie, who is seeking a …

'Children' Slate Wins School Board Election

Vote tally not completed until Wednesday

The three candidates of The Children First Team have all won seats on the Newark School Advisory Board, according to a complete but preliminary tally of votes released Wednesday by the Essex County Clerk’s Office. Results from more than 96 percent of voting districts were released on election night yesterday, but the remainder were not tallied until this morning, according to Essex County Clerk Chris Durkin. Poll workers in a handful of districts failed to turn in electronic cartridges from voting machines last night but did turn in paper tallies from the machines, Durkin said. The vote counts on the cartridges and on paper are identical, he also said. Those paper tallies were counted today and added to the lead already held by Khalil …

Booker Campaign War Chest at Nearly $2 Million

Mayor raising funds for likely Senate bid next year

Mayor and likely Democratic candidate for US Senate Cory Booker has raised $1.9 million for a 2014 campaign, mostly in small increments, according to published reports. A statement released Monday said about two-thirds of the donations Booker has received were for $200 or less. In prior political campaigns, Booker has garnered support from high-powered donors in the financial, tech and entertainment industries. Booker, who is serving his second term as mayor, has already announced he will not seek a third term in 2014. Speculation about the political future of the nationally prominent 43-year-old  reached a high point last year, when Booker said he was mulling a run for governor this year against incumbent Republican Chris Christie. A few …

Report: County Exec Spent $15k On Meals

Papers filed with state Election Law Enforcement Commission show Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. spent thousands in campaign funds at 30 eateries

A report filed with a state election commission reveals Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. has used money in his campaign coffers to cover $15,222 worth of meals at 30 different restaurants — all labeled as campaign meetings, according to a published report Tuesday. DiVincenzo, who is not up for re-election until 2014, has dined at several pricey area restaurants — including 36 times at McLoone’s Boathouse in West Orange, according to the report filed with the state Election Law Enforcement Commission and posted on NJ.com. The filing reveals DiVincenzo has spent more than $17,000 at the restaurant — including $10,000 for a holiday party he hosted there. ELEC rules prohibit the use of campaign funds for personal use. The rules …

Report: Politicians Hide Donor Names And It's Legal

New Jersey law allows contributors who donate less than $300 to remain anonymous.

A published report Sunday revealed New Jersey’s current campaign donation system needs to be revised after it was disclosed politicians can receive more money while still keeping the names of their donors secret — as long as the contributions are less than $300. The NJ.com report said most states allow campaigns to keep only those donors who give $100, $50 or less private, but Garden State politicians don’t have to report any information about people who contribute less than $300. The report said because of the state’s secretive laws, candidates were able to hide about $12 million out of the $100 million donated. The state’s rule allowing campaigns to keep these donors anonymous could undergo a re-evaluation after one of the state’s most …

Hey Kramit, there are many of us Bush followers around, and proud of it, we had it better than we do now with O'vomit and we paid $ 1.87 for gas when George left office. The price of gas has doubled under this idiot, and he refuses to do anything about it. If he wanted to do something about the gas prices he could, if he signed the Keystone pipeline bill, between that and the oil coming out of …   more ›

Report: Amiri Baraka Fundraising for Son's Mayoral Campaign

Email sent out this week seeking money for South Ward's Ras Baraka

One of Newark’s most prominent activists is helping raise money for his son’s mayoral campaign, Politckernj recently reported. Amiri Baraka, a poet who rose to prominence during the 1967 Newark riots, sent out an email blast to a long list of friends on behalf of his son, Ras Baraka, the South Ward councilman and a candidate for mayor in 2014. Baraka is also the principal of Central High School. "It is a monumental task we are waging. It is for the May 2014 Newark, NJ Mayoral election. You can help us with the BARAKA FOR MAYOR campaign with $2,600 for Ras’ campaign, or $10,400 for TEAM BARAKA (4 Council (sic) candidates who will be named shortly). This has been a major struggle to get our second son, Ras to this point where he can …

Newark Councilman Would be 'Honored' to Run with Buono

Report identifies Rice as top candidate for lieutenant governor in 2013 race

An influential online journal of state politics has identified West Ward Councilman Ron Rice as a top pick to be state Sen. Barbara Buono’s running mate in the gubernatorial race against incumbent Chris Christie later this year. Politickernj.com reported Wednesday that Buono, an Edison Democrat who was born in Newark and grew up in Nutley, is seeking to name an African-American as lieutenant governor, a post created in 2009. The lieutenant governor will not have to be named until after the June Democratic primary, which Buono is the heavy favorite to win. The site went on to identify a half-dozen possible candidates for liuetenant governor, including Harry Carson, who played with the 1986 Super Bowl champion New York Giants, and state Sen…

Booker Won't Make Senate Run Official Until After Governor's Race

Mayor will focus on Newark, helping fellow Dems this year

Mayor Cory Booker has filed campaign paperwork with federal election officials, said he will not seek a third term as mayor next year, and announced his interest in running for Senate in 2014. Yet the 43-year-old Democrat has so far refrained from officially launching his bid for the seat of Democrat Frank Lautenberg, who is retiring after his current term expires. And no formal announcement will be forthcoming until after the election of New Jersey’s next governor later this year, the Huffington Post reported Wednesday. “Not until after the governor’s race,” Booker said. “I’m really going to wait.” Booker had said previously he would be focusing most of his energy on city business and on helping Democratic candidates like state Sen. …
