FARMER’S MARKET BEGINS JULY 1 IN NEWARK’S MILITARY PARK

Just in time for you to shop for the coming 4th of July holiday weekend, the newly rehabbed Military Park will be host to the Military Park Farmer’s Market, beginning Tuesday, July 1, through October 14, 2014, 10:00 AM 0 4:00 PM.  The renovated park, which officially opened to the public on June 13, is fast becoming an urban oasis for local residents and area workers who take advantage of its serene setting and beautiful green landscape in the middle of Brick City.

The Military Park Farmer’s Market will offer the best of the Garden State’s bounty with produce from New Jersey’s own Matarazzo Farms and Vacchiano Farms.  Located in the western part of NJ, known as Skylands Region, Vacchiano Farms is known for their farm-raised meats, including lamb, chickens and turkeys, in addition to their many varieties of fruits and vegetables.  Their animals roam freely and are raised on a purely vegetarian diet of high protein grains, without added stimulants, antibiotics or growth hormones.  They also carry a line of freshly-baked fruit pies, made from scratch, using Jersey-grown fruit that is picked at the peak of freshness.

Matarazzo Farms, a working family farm for three generations, will have tomatoes, corn, peaches, ginger and various herbs, to name a few of the many items they offer, not to mention their famous peach cider! One of Mr. Matarazzo’s four daughters is a baker who will supply a variety of vegan breads for those who avoid eggs and dairy.

Hoboken Farms, long a supporter of and participant in New Jersey’s vibrant farmer’s market scene will be there with a stunning array of freshly-baked artisan breads, cured meats and cheeses.  Pickles & Olives will be there and well as Gourmet Nuts and Dried Fruit, and Spice It Up, for exotic rubs and spices.  For those who want to quench their summer thirst, Lizzmonade will be offering refreshing freshly-squeezed fruit-based drinks.

Tuesday promises to be a beautiful sunny day.  So whether you want to pick up something for lunch, grab a snack and a cool drink to fortify you during your chess game, or shop for your Fourth of July barbeque, the Military Park Farmer’s Market has something for you.  And if you’re in the neighborhood for Mayor-elect Ras Baraka’s swearing in at The New Jersey Performing Arts Center, stop by.  We’re on the other side of the park. Experience part of the “New” Newark.  The Military Park Farmer’s Market accepts both WIC and FMNP checks.
