City Offering Free Help with Tax Prep, Student Financial Aid Applications

Newark Now's VITA program kicks off this week

Newark Now launched its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program this week. VITA provides residents with free income tax preparation assistance and also aids students with financial aid (“FAFSA”) applications for college or trade school.

Last year, Newark Now assisted more than 600 students with the FAFSA form, second in the nation to Chicago in the number of completed applications. In 2013, VITA hopes to increase the number of residents it serves and the amount of refunds it generates.

VITA will open up at three sites, at 103 Bloomfield Ave. in the North Ward, 990 Broad Street in the East Ward, and Room B-29 at city hall. Newark Now’s VITA program is the largest in the state.

Newark Now is a non-profit organization founded by Mayor Cory Booker in 2002.
