Family Health Day at Rec Center Saturday

The City of Newark, the Newark Municipal Council, the Division of Recreation and Cultural Affairs, Let’s Move! Newark, and Essex County 4-H will observe a “National Day of Service” on Saturday, Jan. 19, from 3 to 5 pm, with a “Family Health Day” at the Ironbound Recreation Center, 226 Rome St.

The event is free and open to the public.
 
Essex County 4-H youth volunteers and leaders will give out information and fliers about nutrition, exercise, and healthy eating to residents using the recreation center’s facilities. They will also host healthy food demonstrations, nutrition activities, and exercise games. Essex County 4-H is the youth development component of Rutgers Cooperative Extension. 4-H uses a learn-by-doing approach to enable youth to become competent, caring citizens of the world. The program is a partnership with Let’s Move! Newark, which was created by Mayor Cory A. Booker in September 2010. Booker is a National Co-Chair of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative to fight childhood obesity and reduce it within a generation.  Let’s Move! Newark has four components: educating and supporting parents, working to provide healthier food in schools, helping children to be more active, and ensuring that healthy and affordable food is available in Newark.
