FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Newark Arts Council celebrates 30 years with “Art & the City” gala

Fundraising gala to honor the late Congressman Donald M. Payne

Other Honorees include Geri Allen, Amiri Baraka & Richard Florida

Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 6:00 pm at the Newark Museum, Newark, NJ

The Art & the City fundraiser to benefit the Newark Arts Council has become a highly anticipated event and tradition since its 2003 inception.  Always held in a unique and exciting venue, Art & the City follows the Arts Council’s mission by bringing together artists, arts patrons and members of our diverse, growing community for a night to celebrate the arts, culture, and the NAC’s progress as an organization.  As we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Newark Arts Council, we honor our founders and the contributions made by the cultural leaders of our community.

In honoring Congressman Payne, who died on March 6, the Newark Arts Council recognizes his tremendous impact on the arts community in Newark and throughout the state of New Jersey.  Through his public policy efforts, billions of dollars for economic development and other key programs have been allocated to Essex, Hudson and Union counties in his Congressional District.  A native of Newark, Congressman Payne was elected to represent the 10th Congressional District of New Jersey in 1988 as New Jersey’s first African American Congressman.  In 2010, he won election to his twelfth term.  The Newark Arts Council joins everyone in our city mourning the loss of our long-time community servant Congressman Donald M. Payne.

The Newark Arts Council brings the transformative power of the arts into the lives of those who live in, work in, and visit Newark through programs, advocacy, promotion, education, and coordination.  Our goal is to share resources, promote advocacy efforts, assist in audience development and public awareness of arts and culture, and to serve as a cultural resource to the community.
