Free Jazz Concert at NJPAC Tonight

Newark students to perform beside world-renowned artists

Jazz musicians, including performers from the music programs at Arts, Barringer and East Side high schools, will be performing a concert at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Horizon Theater beginning at 7 pm.

Admission is free. The theater is located at 24 Rector St.

Along with the students, the lineup includes Thelonious Monk Jr., jazz legend Jimmy Heath and Antonio Hart, a top alto saxophonist. The student performers include members of the Arts High Sextet: music director and flutist Lawrence Liggins; Shadie Anderson, trombonist; Justin Charles, trumpeter; Sabrina Dias, drummer; Rahsaan Pickett, guitarist; Joseph Quiles on bass and Keryn Williams on piano.

The concert is sponsored by the Prudential Foundation, which provided funding to the Thelonious Monk Institute. The nonprofit Monk institute, named for the bebop legend, works to provide music education at Arts and other Newark schools.
