Newark Brothers Wanted for Store Clerk Killing Arrested, Prosecutor Says

Ivery and Shakil Brinson accused of killing store clerk captured in New Brunswick Wednesday.

Two Newark men wanted for the murder of an Irvington store owner last month were arrested Wednesday in New Brunswick, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Irvington Police Director Joseph Santiago said.

Arrest warrants were issued on July 3 for the men, Ivery Brinson, 26, and his brother, Shakil, 21.  

The men have been charged in the murder of Narendrak Patel, 52, who was shot and killed during a robbery at his convenience store on Myrtle Avenue in Irvington June 29. The men have also been charged with carjacking, armed and weapons offenses. They were each being held on $750,000 bail.

Two other Newark residents, Carnel Colbett, 22, and a 17-year-old, had previously been arrested in connection with Patel’s murder.
