Essex County Offers 'Financial Literacy' Program

Free program geared toward small business owners.

A free, five-session series called “Financial Literacy for Small Businesses” next month is geared toward women, minority, LGBTQ and small business owners.

The event is scheduled to provide information to help entrepreneurs understand the finances of operating a successful business. 

The event is scheduled to be held at noon on five consecutive Mondays—April 7, 14, 21, 28 and May 5—in the Essex County LeRoy F. Smith, Jr. Public Safety Building of the Sheila Oliver Conference Center, 14th Floor at 60 Nelson Place in Newark.

It is being organized by Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and the Office of Small Business Development and Affirmative Action.

“I commend our Office of Small Business Development and Affirmative Action for developing seminars like these that empower entrepreneurs to establish foundations for success. Having a good understanding of basic finance, budgeting and cash flow is important no matter what business you are in,” DiVincenzo said.

The topics and schedule are as follows:

  • April 7 Banking and Accepting Credit Cards
  • April 14 How to Read, Interpret, Use Business Financial Statements
  • April 21 Tracking Income and Expenses
  • April 28 Small Business Budgeting
  • May 5 General Banking

“Our mission is to provide small, women, minority and LGBTQ businesses with knowledge and information to help them compete for contracts on all levels of government. This workshop series will provide business owners with the basics about financial literacy so they can operate their companies effectively and efficiently,” said Deborah E. Collins, director of the Office of Small Business Development and Affirmative Action.
