Shaq Breaking Ground on Rector St. High-rise Apartments

Basketball superstar, actor, rapper and Newark-native Shaquille O’Neal is expected to break ground on a $61 million apartment complex on the former site of the Science High School on Rector Street on Friday.

The 169-unit high-rise apartment complex is Newark’s first in 50 years, according to The Star-Ledger.

The project is a between the seemingly-affable 7’1” center and Boraie Development, who partnered last year to revamp the former Newark Screens 6 on Springfield Avenue.

O’Neal’s latest project is just steps from NJPAC and is expected to have more than 7,500 square feet of retail space, the Ledger reported Friday.

Shaq is expected to attend the ceremony Friday, along with Newark Mayor Cory Booker and U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, according to The Wall Street Journal.
