Newark Man Accused of Beating Death

Darrell Moody is being held on $500,000 bail on an aggravated manslaughter charge.

A city man has been charged in the fatal beating of an Irvington resident earlier this month, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office announced Friday.

Donnell Smith, 47, was found July 5 lying on the ground near 728 Springfield Ave. in Irvington. Smith, who had been in an argument with his attacker, was pronounced dead at University Hospital, NorthJersey.com reported. The cause of death was blunt-force trauma.

On Friday, personnel from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the FBI’s Fugitive Task Force arrested Darrell Moody, 37, of Avon Avenue. He was charged with aggravated manslaughter and was being held at the Essex County jail.

Bail was set at $500,000, the prosecutor’s office also said.
