Unworn Seat Belt Leads to Weapon, Drug Arrest

A 24-year-old city man was arrested Tuesday on several drugs and weapons charged after Newark police stopped his vehicle for failing to wear a seatbelt, the department said in a statement Tuesday. 

Tejuan Davis was stopped near 109 S. 9th St. around 8 pm by members of the department’s Gang Enforcement Unit. As officers approached the vehicle, Davis was reportedly seen removing what police later discovered was a 9-mm firearm from his waistband and tossing it on the passenger-side floor. Davis who has an extensive arrest record, was also in possession of 16 decks of heroin, police said. 

Governor Orders Newark Water-Use Restrictions

Governor Chris Christie is asking customers served by the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC) to limit water use as repairs are made to the agency’s treatment facility in Newark, which was damaged by flooding and power outages during Hurricane Sandy. 

The agency serves 1.4 million customers in several North Jersey towns, including the Essex County towns of Newark, Belleville, Bloomfield, Cedar Grove, Montclair, North Caldwell, Nutley, South Orange and West Orange.

Newark to Be Highlighted in New Magazine

A new destination magazine promoting attractions and things to do in Newark will hit the shelves in early 2013.

The publication, called NewarkBound, will feature photography and stories about arts and culture, food, family fun and things to do in New Jersey's largest city and neighboring communities.

Clothing Drive for North Ward Friday

On Friday, the Prudential Center Arena hosted the Korean pop (K-pop) band, Big Bang. Organizers say The Big Bang concert was the largest entertainment event held in the state in the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy.

The non-profit organization “K-pop Fans for Hurricane Sandy Relief” collected new or gently used blankets, winter clothing, hats, gloves and scarves. All clothing, blankets, and other goods collected were to be donated directly to residents of Newark’s North Ward.

NJPAC Collects Food For Sandy Relief

John Schreiber, president and CEO of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, has announced that the center will be rolling out an ongoing relief effort for those affected by Hurricane Sandy, including designating 2,000 tickets for upcoming performances as relief fund tickets, where 100 percent of the ticket price will be donated to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.

All relief fund tickets will be $25 and will be in locations throughout Prudential Hall and the Victoria Theater. NJPAC will also become a drop-off site for the ongoing collection of goods that will be donated to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey.
