Dorthaan’s Place: The Antoinette Montague Quartet

NJPAC’s jazz brunch series hosts Newark-born vocalist Antoinette Montague, a jazz singer who moves effortlessly between gutsy blues and hushed romantic ballads.
Dorthaan’s Place welcomes Antoinette Montague, a Newark-born jazz vocalist acclaimed for her performances at the Blue Note, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, the Jazz Standard and other top jazz venues. “Her sound is smooth with a soulful edge,” says Jersey Jazz. “Montague never gets tied up with vocal excesses—she’s emphatic when she needs to be, and tender at the appropriate moments.”
Whether she’s belting out a blues number or whispering a gentle love song, Montague has become known for her evocative interpretive powers and technical prowess. On her CD Behind the Smile, Montague lends her singular touch to a mix of original songs and American standards like “The Song Is You,” “Get Ready,” “Somewhere in the Night” and more. “Jazz players love to accompany a genuine jazz singer, and Antoinette Montague is as real as they come,” says Jazz Times.
This intimate jazz brunch at NICO Kitchen + Bar is curated and hosted by WBGO programmer Dorthaan Kirk, Newark's "First Lady of Jazz."
