Armed Robber Claimed to Be Police Officer

Newark Police are searching for a man who robbed a pharmacy on Mt. Prospect Avenue Saturday morning.

Police are searching for a man who claimed to be a police officer and robbed a pharmacy of money and drugs Saturday morning, according to Newark Police Det. Todd McClendon.

The man first entered Giannotto's Pharmacy at 195 First St. shortly before 11 a.m. and claimed to be a police officer installing surveillance cameras, according to McClendon. The man asked to enter the rear of the store, but fled when a pharmacy employee went to get a manager.

A short time later, the same man went to Medcare Family Pharmacy at 644 Mt. Prospect Ave. and committed an armed robbery, according to McClendon. The man made off with an undetermined amount of cash and a variety of drugs.

No injuries were reported from either incident.

Police are searching for a man described as "short" and wearing a dark hoody, jeans, an "open face mask" and a black backpack.

Would be nice if the Patch gave a better description. How about stating if he was black, white Hispanic? Approximate age? And how short is short?
