Body of Murder Victim Found in Newark Early Saturday

East Orange man may have been killed somewhere else, officials say

Police are investigating the death of a 45-year-old East Orange man whose body was found on a Newark street early Saturday morning, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.


Jamil Jeffries, was unresponsive when he was discovered by police at 83 Paul Ave. at around 4:30 am. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The medical examiner later ruled Jeffries death a homicide, the prosecutor’s office also said, but a cause of death was not immediately released. Anthony Ambrose, the chief of detectives for the prosecutor’s office, told NJ.com that Jeffries did not die of gunshot wounds.

Investigators believe Jeffries was killed at another location and left at the site where police found him, the prosecutor’s office also said.
