Carjacker Crashes Vehicle into Hydrant, Ending Pursuit

Teen leads police on pursuit, crashes car in West Ward

A 19-year-old Newark man was arrested Thursday evening after crashing a carjacked vehicle into a fire hydrant following a police chase in the city's West Ward, authorities said.

Newark police spotted the carjacked vehicle out of East Orange around 8 p.m. near the intersection of Salem Street and South Orange Avenue, according to Det. Todd McClendon, Newark Police Department spokesperson. Police pursued the vehicle into the city's West Ward when the car struck a hydrant at the intersection of West End and 18th Avenue. The unidentified suspect was arrested and transported to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

There were no civilian accidents or injuries, McClendon said.
