Child Taken by Carjacker Found Safe

Second incident of its kind since last Thursday

A vehicle was carjacked with a young child still inside, Newark police spokesman Sgt. Ronald Glover said in a statement Wednesday.

The victim left her Nissan Altima idling at 531 Central Ave. around 7 pm. A man entered the vehicle and sped off with a 5-year-old child in the back seat. The car was found abandoned a few blocks away at N. 10th Street and Central Avenue. The child was still inside and unharmed, Glover said.

This is the second such incident since last Thursday.

On the evening of Jan. 24, a woman was forced from her SUV as she sat parked along S. 17th Street. An infant and toddler were in the vehicle when the carjacker sped off.

That vehicle was also found abandoned by an Essex County Sheriff's officer a  short distance away. The children were unharmed.
