Off-Duty Officers Foil Bank Robbers' Getaway, Police Say

License plate number leads to arrests of alleged robbers, one of whom was hiding in the trunk with a bag of cash, according to report.

Two off-duty police officers from New Providence and Newark halted the getaway of a pair of bank robbers who stole $2,000 from a Union Township Bank on Monday, police said.

Saboor Ali, 54, of Newark, and Thomas McDaniel, 42, of Elizabeth, were each charged with armed robbery, weapons possession, resisting arrest, obstruction and motor vehicle violations, according to NJ.com.

After the two men allegedly robbed the PNC Bank on Morris Avenue at gunpoint, off-duty officers, Detective Debbie Teixeira, of Newark, and New Providence Officer Andrew Diamond, saw a man sprint from the bank and enter a Hyundai parked in the area, the article said. As the car took off, Diamond wrote down its license plate number.

Officers pulled over the vehicle a short time later, arresting the driving and found the second alleged robber in the trunk with a bag of cash, the article said.
