An off-duty Newark police officer discovered a dead body around noon today, authorities have announced.
The matter is being investigated as a possible homicide, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Police Department also said.
Lt. Carlos Figueroa found the fully clothed, decomposing body in a vacant building in a former US Post Office facility in the 900 block of Broad Street.
The remains have been taken to the Regional Medical Examiners Office to determine the cause of death. At this point the identity of the person discovered in the vacant building is unknown.
