Corrections Officer Charged in Sexual Assault of Prisoner

Shaw also lied to investigators, US Attorney says

A corrections officer at the Essex County Correctional Facility has been indicted for allegedly sexually assaulting a prisoner and lying to investigators about the incident, the US Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.


Shawn D. Shaw, a 40-year-old Newark resident, allegedly attacked the victim Dec. 28, 2010 and caused “bodily harm,” the US Attorney’s Office said.


When questioned about the incident, Shaw allegedly lied about making sexual comments to the victim or entering the cell, the US Attorney’s Office also said.

Shaw, who has been suspended, was released on $100,000 bail last month. He was arraigned yesterday.


He has been charged with depriving an individual of rights under color of law and obstruction of justice.
