19-year-old charged with aggravated assault, burglary and weapons offenses.

An off-duty East Orange police officer early Friday shot a Newark man who was allegedly breaking into the police officer’s car, Acting East Orange Police Chief Thomas Koundry and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Around 2:30 a.m., the officer, who was not identified by officials, saw Robert Robinson, 19, burglarizing his vehicle, the prosecutor's office said. When the officer approached, Robinson brandished an “object,” the prosecutor’s office said, prompting the officer to fire.

Robinson was treated at East Orange General Hospital and released. He has been charged with aggravated assault, burglary and weapons offenses.
