Five Men Shot in Newark Monday Night

Police investigating three separate shootings, vehicle fire

The Major Crimes Unit of the Newark Police Department is investigating several shootings and a minivan fire occurring Monday night throughout the city. Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle similar to the one that had been torched at several of the incidents Monday.

The spate of violence began when two men, aged 19 and 30 were shot at 195 First St. around 6:30 pm. Both were taken to University Hospital where they were listed in stable condition.

A third man, a 40-year-old Ocean Gate resident, was shot in the arm less than 90 minutes later at 437 Central Ave.. The man, who has an extensive criminal history that includes nearly two dozen arrests for drugs, kidnapping, weapons and assault, was found at 150 Cabinet St. by EMS workers. Police have not yet determined a motive but are conducting an extensive review of the victim’s criminal history.

Around the same time, a 37-year-old city man was shot in the torso at 380 Chancellor Ave. and was taken to University. Police later learned a second man had been shot at the same address and had been taken to Beth Israel Medical Center by a friend.

The minivan was found on fire at 124 11th Ave. shortly after 8 pm. Police have not tied the vehicle to any specific incident occurring Monday.

The investigations are ongoing and police urge anyone with information relative to these incidents or any other criminal activity to contact police at 877 NWK-TIPS (877 695-8477).

This is typical violence for Newark in the month of October as it is notoriously "gang initiation month"! I realize the NPD is over-worked and I appreciate the good job they do, but you would think they could anticipate this well-known spike in violence and intercept it. It would also be nice to have a stronger call for peace from City Hall, but we all know the Mayor is focused on education and national elections right now!

So niow we know the minimum number of killings/shootings is five before the news media to report them for Newark.
