Cleric's Son Among Victims of Multiple Shooting Tuesday

Officials asking the public for information.

A multiple shooting in Newark Tuesday has claimed two lives and left three others wounded, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Newark police announced.

Gunfire broke out around 11:30 am in the 400 block of Springfield Avenue, officials said. 

Police Director Samuel DeMaio identified one of the victims, Akbar Muhammad, who is the son of Imam Abdul Akbar Muhammad of Masjid Imam Ali K. Muslim Mosque.

The victims were all sitting in the same car when the shooter approached, according to two members of the Newark Municipal Council. MUhammad was at the wheel. 

The shooting also appeared to be targeted, one of those officials, Central Ward Councilman Darrin Sharif, told NJ.com.
