Three teens, adult charged with fatal robbery attempt

Four people have been arrested and charged with the Sept. 1 murder of a pizza deliveryman, Newark police and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday.

Jesus Torres, 20, of Newark, was gunned down during a robbery attempt as he drove along the 300 block of South 11th Street. Torres’s car was surrounded by a group of males, one of whom fired a single shot, killing him.

Two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old, all of Newark, have been charged with felony murder, robbery, conspiracy and weapons offenses. A 20-year-old Newark man, Shaquille Faines, has also been arrested.

Faines is being held on $1 million bail. The three juveniles, who are now being held at the Essex County Youth House, may be tried as adults, said Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly.

“I want to credit the dedicated, around-the-clock work of the detectives assigned to the Homicide Task Force and commend them for bringing this heinous crime to a quick close. This case is a testament to how efficiently we can investigate crimes when we collaborate together in a task force setting,” said Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray.  ”I hope that bringing the suspects responsible for this senseless crime to justice so quickly will bring some sense of solace to the Torres family.”
