Four Newark Relatives Indicted for Killing Bodega Owner, Prosecutor Says

Three brothers and their cousin are accused of fatally shooting an Irvington store owner during an alleged robbery last year.

Three Newark brothers and their cousin have been indicted for the killing of an Irvington bodega owner, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.

An Essex County Grand Jury returned a nine-count indictment for Ivery Brinson, 26, Shakil Brinson, 22, Deion Brinson, 18, and Carnel Colbert, 23.

The four men have been indicted for murder, conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, felony murder, conspiracy to commit carjacking, carjacking and weapons offenses.

They are accused of killing Narendrak Patel, 52, the owner of Irvington Mini Market, on June 29, 2013. According to the prosecutor's office, Patel was fatally shot during an attempted robbery of his Myrtle Avenue store at about 4 p.m. in the afternoon.

The four men then fled the area by carjacking someone in Irvington, the prosecutor's office said.

The defendants are scheduled to be arraigned before Judge Ronald Wigler on June 24.
