Irvington Man Found Guilty of Newark Murder

Prosecutors praise witnesses to 'brazen' 2011 shooting

An Irvington man with a long arrest record was found guilty Thursday of killing a Newark resident in 2011, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

Andre Mells, 29, faces up to a combined 40 years in prison for murder and for a separate weapons charge when he’s sentenced next month.

On May 29, 2011, Idris Denmark, 27, was shot 10 times while at New Hope Village on Norfolk Street. The shooting occurred around 4:30 pm.

Prosecutors praised witnesses who came forward to testify in what they described as a “brazen shooting in broad daylight.”

Mells has 15 adult arrests and two prior felony convictions. In 2003 he was convicted of aggravated assault and in 2005 of unlawful possession of a weapon.
