Man Killed in Apparent Targeted Shooting Friday

Victim was gunned down at gas station market

A 25-year-old city man was shot and killed Friday night at a Washington Street gas station, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Police Department announced.

Police responded to the corner of Washington and Court streets around 7:45 pm and found Hykine Johnson, who had sustained gunshot wounds. He was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:10 pm.

Johnson appears to have been shot inside a market at the station and was likely targeted, the prosecutor’s office said.

The matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. Anyone with information is asked to contact task force detectives at 877-847-7432 or 973-621-4586.
