Newark Cop Indicted for Pulling Gun in Road Rage Incident, Prosecutor Says

Veteran officer is accused of pulling a gun on a father in front of his 11-year-old son following a traffic dispute while he was off-duty.

A veteran Newark police officer was indicted Wednesday for chasing a couple and pulling a gun on a father in front of his family during an apparent road rage incident, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.

David Hudson, 43, of Irvington, has been indicted for official misconduct, aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

According to the prosecutor's office, Hudson got into a dispute with another driver on March 8 while he was off duty. Hudson followed the other vehicle from Central Avenue and West Market Street onto Interstate 280 and ultimately to the area of Broad Street and 3rd Avenue, the prosecutor's office said.

Hudson got out of his Cadillac and confronted the father, who had his 11-year-old son in the car, the prosecutor's office said. Hudson then pointed a handgun at the man, the prosecutor's office said.

Hudson was not in lawful possession of the handgun he was carrying that day, the prosecutor's office said.

Hudson is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Aug. 8.
