Newark Man Accused of Carjacking

22-year-old faces up to life in prison

A 22-year-old city man accused of a Hillside carjacking last month appeared in court Wednesday, the US Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

Prosecutors say that on Dec. 26, Larry Brown approached a parked 2012 BMW X5 and ordered the occupant out at gunpoint. After an accomplice robbed the victim, the two entered the car and drove off. The US Attorney’s Office did not identify the accomplice.

Later that day East Orange police found the car and reportedly saw Brown and the accomplice walking away from it.

If convicted, Brown faces up to 15 years in prison for the carjacking as well as seven years to life for using the weapon. Each charge also carries a fine of up to $250,000.
