Newark Man Accused of Stabbing Death

Jorge Venegas, 58, was found dead in an abandoned Mt. Prospect Avenue home last Sunday.

A Newark resident has been accused of stabbing a 58-year-old city man to death, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.

Jose Gonzalez, 34, has been charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in the death of Jorge Venegas.

Venegas was found stabbed to death in an abandoned house on Mt. Prospect Avenue last Sunday afternoon, the prosecutor's office said.

Gonzalez was arrested Thursday night in the area of Bloomfield and Mt. Prospect avenues in the city's north ward, the prosecutor's office said.

Gonzalez was transported to the Essex County Jail in lieu of $750,000 bail.

The investigation remains ongoing.
