Newark Man Faces 40 Years in Prison for Shooting at Police

Fate fired on officers during car chase in 2011

A Newark man was found guilty Wednesday of shooting at city police during a wild vehicle pursuit through the city in 2011, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Khaalid Fate, 37, and George Jones, 45, also of Newark, were spotted in a stolen 2001 Dodge Caravan on Nov. 20, 2011. When police tried to stop the vehicle, Fate took off, leading police through Newark on a high-speed pursuit.

Fate fired at the pursuing officers at least four times before he and Jones were arrested.

In addition to two counts of aggravated assault, Fate was found guilty of weapons offenses, eluding, receiving stolen property and resisting arrest. He was acquitted of the more serious charge of attempted murder of a police officer. He faces between 20 and 40 years in prison when he’s sentenced in December.

Jones, who was Fate’s co-defendant, was sentenced yesterday to six months for resisting arrest.
