Newark Man Gets 15 Years for Shooting Wife at Bus Stop
Man also shot, passing driver injured in 2011 incident
A 44-year-old city man with a violent criminal history was sentenced Monday to 15 years in prison for the attempted murder of his estranged wife and the man who tried to help her, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said in a statement.
On Sept. 14, 2011, Garland Jones spotted his wife and another man as they stood at a bus stop at Grafton Avenue and Broadway. Jones approached her and began choking her, prompting the man to come to her aid. Jones then pulled out a handgun and fired, striking the woman in the chest, ankle and back. The man was shot in the arm. A passing motorist was hurt when a bullet struck her windshield and flying glass cut her face.
Jones, who had been convicted in 2000 of sexual assault and of aggravated assault in 2009, must serve 85 percent of his sentence under New Jersey’s No Early Release Act (NERA) before becoming eligible for parole
