Newark Man Pleads Guilty in 2009 Death

28-year-old agrees to aggravated manslaughter charge; sentenced to 25 years in prison.

A 28-year-old Newark man pleaded guilty today in court to the October 2009 death of a Venezuelan man.

With his trial already under way before Superior Court Judge Alfonse Cifelli, Victor Sanchez decided to plead guilty to aggravated manslaughter in connection with the death of Felix Torres-Diaz, 43, on Oct. 17, 2009.

According to Assistant Prosecutor Rachel Gran, who handled the case, Torres-Diaz and Sanchez got into an altercation that night before Sanchez returned to the 200 block of Park Avenue in Newark shortly after 6 p.m. and shot the victim three times before fleeing.

Sanchez was tracked to the Blue Sky Cafeteria in Miami on Jan. 8, 2010 and arrested, according to a news release from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
