Newark Mom Accused of Leaving Toddler Alone in Car

Child unharmed but briefly hospitalized for observation.

A city woman was arrested Thursday and charged with child endangerment after her 2-year-old baby was found unattended in a car, Sgt. Ron Glover of the Newark Police Department said.

Police responded to 765 Broad St. at about 1:30 pm and found the child, who was in good condition but was hospitalized as a precaution, Glover said.

Glover did not know the sex of the baby. 

The baby's mother, Sophia Charles, 23, was arrested when she retutned to the car.

It was unclear how long the baby had been left alone or what Charles was doing while the child was in the car, Glover also said.

The state Division of Youth and Family Services was notified about the incident.
