Newark Pair Arrested on Drug, Weapons Charges

Heroin, Xanax, cocaine recovered by sheriff's officers

Two Newark men are being held on bail in Essex County jail Wednesday after being arrested on weapons and drug charges Monday by county sheriff's officers. 

During an undercover operation, the Essex County officers saw two men, identified as Effron Bass, 40, and Alshaquan Brown, 22, involved in a drug sale involving a white van parked near South 8th Street. 

As a result of the men’s arrest, police seized 216 decks of heroin — stamped "Greenhouse," a 9mm Talon handgun, .45-caliber rounds, 82 Xanax pills, 57 grams of cocaine and drug-packaging paraphernalia.

Bass was charged with three counts each of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute and possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school. 

In addition, Bass was charged with the unlawful possession of a weapon, committing a drug offense while in possession of a weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Brown was charged with two counts each of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute and possession of a controlled dangerous substance within 1,000 feet of a school. 

At Wednesday's arraignment before Judge Roslyn Holmes-Grant, Bass was ordered to be held at the Essex County Correctional Facility on $125,000 bail and Brown was ordered held on $65,000 bail.
