Newark Man Wanted for Carjacking Caught, Police Say

Both men who allegedly stole a Chevy Camaro at gunpoint are now in custody.

Officers from the Newark Police Department’s fugitive unit arrested a city man Thursday who allegedly took part in a carjacking July 5, department spokesman Sgt. Ron Glover said.

Justin Smith, 23, was taken into custody at his Huntington Terrace home and charged with carjacking, conspiracy and weapons offenses.

Earlier this month, police said Smith and another man, 18-year-old Anthony Smith, of Newark, approached a 22-year-old man as he emerged from a supermarket at Lehigh Avenue and Clinton Place and demanded the man’s 2012 Chevy Camaro at gunpoint. One of the two then drove off in the car and the other ran from the scene, Glover said.
