Newark Police Hosting Gun Buyback

Weapons can net up to $250 each

The city of Newark, the Newark Police Department and a charity, “Jewelry for a Cause,” are hosting a gun buyback Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28 from 8 am to 8 pm. The buyback will be held at the police department’s property and procurement section, 104 Arlington St.

Weapons that are collected will be turned into jewelry by “Jewelry For A Cause,” which has gained national attention for its creative re-use of surrendered weapons in its retail line, “The Caliber Collection.” Proceeds from the jewelry sales are used to fund future gun buy-back and amnesty programs in Newark and across the nation.

The fees being offered for weapons are: $50 for inoperable guns; $150 for revolvers’ $150 for shotguns; $150 for rifles; $200 for semi-automatics; and $250 for assault rifles.

Anyone surrendering weapons is granted immunity from prosecution for possessing these firearms. The person surrendering the weapon must not already be charged with, or under investigation for, the unlawful possession of the firearm to be surrendered. No more than three firearms may be surrendered by any one person at any one time. If an individual arrives with more than three weapons, all will be processed, but the person surrendering the weapon will be given compensation for only three of the weapons.

Firearms being surrendered should be wrapped in paper and either tied or taped while being transported to the designated drop-off location, and be clear of any bullets. No compensation will be given for BB guns, pellet guns, paintball guns, or ammunition.
