Newark Police Seek Crackdown on Street Racing

Officials blame social media for proliferation, danger from high-speed contests.

It may not be a new phenomenon, but police in Newark count themselves among a growing number of local law enforcement officials who are lamenting the return of illegal street racing in their city, according to a recent report on ABClocal.com.

Police believe the popularity of social media has contributed to the return of the racing, especially on Routes 1 & 9.

But Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio blames watered down laws and those racing scattering when police attempt to break up the races for the proliferation of the racing.
